SPCA Introduces Targeting Programs to Combat PA’s Cat Crisis

Jun 9, 2011 | 8:20 AM

As a follow-up to the announcement last week with respect to the cat crisis, the Prince Albert SPCA, in collaboration with local veterinarians, will be implementing two new initiatives to begin addressing the over population of cats within the city.

All revenue generated to date, and in the future, from the sale of cat licenses will be targeted towards a “Barn Buddies” neuter program and “Fixed Income” Spay/Neuter program.

The “Barn Buddies” program will target male cats who are considered “unadoptable” due to non- use of litter boxes. “This program will give these cats the chance to live as mousers in selected farm, barn or shop situations, said Debbie Lehner, Manager of the SPCA.

“Prospective adopters must register with the SPCA and meet basic criteria.” People interested in this program are asked to contact the SPCA. Once a cat has been chosen and the adoption finalized, the SPCA will have the cat neutered. “There will be no adoption fee but a donation at the time of adoption would be greatly appreciated,” added Lehner.
The “Fixed Income” program has been developed to help those citizens of Prince Albert with spaying/neutering their pet. The SPCA will be compiling a list of citizens who could benefit from financial assistance.

Those supported by the program would have to meet specific criteria to quality.
“Spaying and Neutering are the most effective ways to control a pet population,” said Lehner. “We are hopeful that these targeted programs will begin to reduce the amount of cats that arrive at our facility on a daily basis and reduce the number of unwanted pets in our city.”

There is an opportunity for the citizens of Prince Albert to participate in these initiatives by sponsoring a cat to be spayed or neutered if they so desire.

The public is encouraged view the SPCA pets at www.princealbertspca.com or to call the shelter at 763-6110.
