Bear cub captured and released

Jun 8, 2011 | 11:53 AM

There is some news regarding the search for three little bears in the Prince Albert area.

One of the small cubs has been captured.

Conservation officers have been searching for the cubs for nearly three weeks. Their mother was shot and killed in the city's Hazeldell area last month. The cub found was about the same size as a medium sized dog.

“As far as they could tell, he was perfectly fine,” said Bonnie Green with the Ministry of Environment.

She said the plan was turn the cubs over to the forestry farm in Saskatoon, but that did not work out.

“I guess the forestry farm just didn't have the facilities or were not interested in accepting the bear. So the plan is to release the bear back into the provincial forest,” said Green.

“For the time being that is really the best place for it to go, so we feel that was the best choice to make.”

Green said there have no sightings of the other cubs and she thinks they may have found a habitat farther away from the city.

If anyone does come across the bears, they are encouraged to contact the Conservation office.
