Safe return expected for fire evacuees

An environmental officer has run test on the water in Wollaston Lake to make sure it is safe for the community.

This was the message from Richard Kent, commissioner of emergency and protective services for the Prince Albert Grand Council, during a press conference today.

“He confirms that a potable water supply is just fine and all conditions point to a safe return home for all the community members,” Kent said.

He said there were some community members left to protect the infrastructure in the communities.

“There has been no power outages, so people don’t have to worry about their food being thawed out in the freezers and that type of thing.”

Steve Roberts, executive director of the province’s wildfire management, said crews have been scanning the area with infrared imaging to locate any hot spots.

“The perimeter remains secure around the community allowing for folks to return,” Roberts said.

“We will end up with local smoke issues, but currently that is not a problem because the winds are from the north keeping the smoke away.”
