Wildfire evacuation centres to receive more security

Jun 4, 2011 | 11:06 AM

Extra security is being sent to evacuee centres in Saskatoon and Prince Albert today.

The move comes after Saskatoon police made several arrests Thursday night at the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre , which has been acting as an a evacuation centre for residents of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation.

The arrests were made in connection with reports of fighting, intoxication and public disturbances.

Norm Vetter, manager of Saskatchewan’s emergency social services, said an entire community is in a cramped space, so it's not that unusual.

“For the people coming out of the community, this is not an easy process for them. Many of them have been sitting in airports and hangers for sometimes up to 10 or 12 hours before they got transferred out. Everyone is tired and it is a strain on local people,” he said.

Saskatoon police said they dealt with 32 incidents overnight on Thursday.

There were approximately 1,200 community members evacuated to either Prince Albert or Saskatoon.
