Ducks reunited by school children

Jun 3, 2011 | 4:40 PM

Students around the city took care of baby ducks for a month, and on Friday reunited the flock at the Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.

It was the 14th year that the Duck Launch has taken place at a small pond in the gardens.

Earlier in the year, freshly hatched ducklings are delivered to schools where they were taken care of by the 300 students involved in the program.

According to Wayne Timoffee with the funeral home, it’s about teaching kids important life lessons.

“It teaches them responsibility, plus they see an evolution of life from an infant to an adult duck,” he said.

“They learn what life is all about and get an opportunity to be involved in life.”

St. Francis Grade 4 teacher Lori-Anne Bayda said it was a good experience for her class.

“We had the ducks since they were just wee little things, about a day old, and the kids had to learn how to feed them and take care of them and clean up after them… all in all it’s been a great experience,” she said.

About 40 ducks were reunited in the pond where they’ll remain for the school children to visit.
