Regina MP Andrew Scheer elected as Speaker of the House

Regina-area MP, Andrew Scheer, has made history after being elected Speaker of the House.

Scheer, 32, was one of eight MPs running for the position in Ottawa.

A secret ballot was held to decide the winner. Scheer is the first member from Saskatchewan to be elected to the post.

Before the vote, Scheer said he was hoping it wouldn't be as difficult as his party's quest for a majority government.

“The nice thing about multiple votes is that it’s all done in the same day, not like over many years as it’s taken the Conservatives to obtain a majority,” said Scheer on Wednesday.

Scheer will be tasked with overseeing debate and enforcing parliamentary rules. The Speaker must remain partial but prior to the vote, Scheer pledged that his constituents will still be represented if he did indeed land the position.

“It’s a different role but the ultimate nature of (me) as a representative of the people of Regina-Qu’Appelle doesn’t change at all and I still, above all else, put that as my most important responsibility,” said Scheer on Wednesday.
