Saskatchewan Roughriders host charity golf tournament

It was one more day of not thinking about football as members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders were out supporting a good cause Tuesday.

The team held its fourth annual Rider Players Golf Charity Classic at Deer Valley Golf Course in support of Jesse's Journey (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) and The Chris Knox Foundation.

And it's also a chance for player's to reconnect with teammates as a new season is set to begin.

Running back Hugh Charles didn't see a lot of action last year, much to the disappointment of fans, due to the ratio issue.

This being the final year of his contract, he says he's worked on some things to hopefully get in the line up a little more.

“I want to get that game time,” said Charles. “I was fortunate enough to go down to Florida and catch some punts. You may see me a little more on special teams which will hopefully allow me to get some more game time.”

A big battle to watch is who will replace the retired Jeremy O'Day at center.

O'Day says he's looking forward to seeing the upcoming battle and that hard work will play a big key in who takes over his position.

“I can't wait to see the guys we've been evaluating and see them come to camp and see how they're going to perform against our veterans,” said O'Day.

“It's going to be very competitive. I think that's one of the things we wanted to emphasize is having everyone competing for their job. I think that's important anytime you come to pro camp competing for your job. It keeps you in tip-top shape.”

Rookie camp starts up Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium. Main camp starts Sunday at 8:15 a.m. at Mosaic Stadium.
