Sask. government arranges cheque pickup in event of Canada Post strike

Jun 1, 2011 | 7:00 AM

The Saskatchewan government has worked out a plan to make sure social services clients get their money in the event Canada Post workers go on strike as early as Thursday.

Starting Tuesday, non-monthly cheques for some programs will be distributed through ministry offices throughout the province and will be ready for pick up starting Thursday afternoon. Those programs include the Saskatchewan Assistance Program, Transitional Employment Allowance, Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability, Family Service, Cognitive Disability benefits and some community-based organizations (CBOs).

Most of the monthly cheques were mailed out Monday or earlier, so they should arrive before any postal disruption.

Most payments won't be affected because they're made by direct deposit so fewer than 1,000 cheques will need to be picked up.

If you need to pick up a cheque, visit the ministry's website (www.socialservices.gov.sk.ca) for dates and locations. Clients can also call 1-888-286-0399.

Saskatchewan Crown corporations prepare

SaskPower and SaskEnergy have been getting ready for a potential strike for the last few weeks.

Casey MacLeod with SaskEnergy said they’ve been printing bills early and twice to make sure customers get them.

At the same time, she says not getting a bill is never accepted as a reason for not paying up.

MacLeod said you can still find out how much you owe at their offices, websites or bill hotline.

Canada Revenue Agency encourages direct deposit

The Canada Revenue Agency is reminding taxpayers and businesses to sign up for direct deposit of the benefit payments and tax refunds.
