Saskatchewan high school track and field championships cancelled

May 27, 2011 | 5:40 PM

Saskatchewan students hoping for a shot a provincial track and field championship will have to wait until next year.

The event, with an expected attendance of about 1,600 students on June 3 and 4 in Regina, has been cancelled by its governing body.

Executive director of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association Kevin Vollet said they couldn't risk the teachers' voluntary services still being withdrawn.

“It was a very tough decision anytime you're dealing with student athletes, who of course is what our teacher coaches and our association is all about,” he said.

Vollet said waiting longer to see what happens with the teachers' contract could have cost some schools a lot of money in non-refundable hotel rooms and buses.

And, because the event is so close to the end of the school year, Vollet said there's no opportunity for them to reschedule the event.

He insists it won't affect any sports scholarships, as elite athletes will already be on the radar of the provincial athletic associations.

This is only the third time the championship has been cancelled — in 1954 and 1963 it was cancelled because of weather.
