Randy Hoback MP Report

Before I begin my first MP Report of the 41st Parliament, I would like to graciously thank all residents of the federal riding of Prince Albert for their continued trust.

To be re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Prince Albert is a tremendous honour; and one that I meet with a sense of reserved elation. I have always had tremendous respect for our institutions of government and I hope that in the coming years I may continue to serve the people of this community with integrity and distinction.

A stable majority conservative government presents me and my Conservative colleagues with the opportunity to address the long-term economic and institutional challenges facing our country.

For the 41st time in our nation’s history, our democratic process has peacefully revealed the will of the Canadian people. Canadians have been abundantly clear that Canada’s Senate must now begin the process of becoming a truly democratic body which is modern and accountable.

Hence, I agree with Premier Wall’s criticism of the recent appointment of Senators from Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador. Let me be clear however, this is not a criticism of the individuals who were recently appointed. In fact, I have gotten to know and work closely with two of the three appointees and can vouch that they will be great additions to the Senate.

Nor is it a criticism of the recent appointment of Saskatchewan Senator Pamela Wallin. Senator Wallin is the type of person we require in the Senate. She has truly raised the bar in regards to the role and work ethic of a legislator. Whether it is in her legislative work in committee, or her work in fundraising for Saskatchewan charities, Senator Wallin is truly a remarkable Senator that Saskatchewan can be proud of.

My criticism is of the process in which they obtained these positions. The days of any Prime Minister subjectively choosing Senators is as outdated as the single desk selling of wheat and barley. Prime Minister Harper unfortunately could not offer Quebecers and Newfoundlanders & Labradoreans a choice as to whom would represent them in the Senate, as Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador have yet to implement a democratic method to elect its choice of Senators.

Luckily, our legislature in Regina has already passed legislation to elect our next Senator – legislation which transfers the Prime Minister’s role in the decision of who is appointed, to the people of Saskatchewan.

In 2012, Saskatchewan will have a vacancy in the Senate. Saskatchewanians can therefore have a direct say on who will be their next Senator if Premier Wall chooses to utilize the infrastructure of this fall’s Saskatchewan provincial election to also elect Saskatchewan’s Senatorial choice. This would be a cost effective and responsible way to have Saskatchewan join Alberta in democratically electing its representatives in Canada’s upper house.

I believe the people of Saskatchewan can be trusted to make this important decision, as the decision of the electorate is always right, and therefore must always be respected.

So I respectfully ask my Premier to please make this Senatorial election happen.
