Play it Safe – Safety Tips for the May Long

May 18, 2011 | 10:07 AM

With the official kick off to summer just days away, we are all anxious to get the long weekend started. Long weekends always see an increase in motor vehicle collisions and injuries related to recreational sports. Do your part by being safe this long weekend.

To help to survive the long weekend, here are a few extra items to pack along besides food and camping gear.

• Life jacket or personal flotation device for the boat or other water craft
• Sun screen and hat
• A first aid kit
• A whistle – for hiking or your life jacket – to signal for help

Consider these added safety reminders when travel or at the cottage this long weekend.

• Ensure your vehicle is in good working order
• Properly secure any trailers before beginning to tow them
• Limit distractions while driving such as no cell phones, secure pets and objects in the vehicle
• Slow down and watch for traffic
• If you come upon the scene of a vehicle collision be the first to care. Even simple things like calling for help or giving a blanket to keep someone warm are great first steps.
• Know where you are going to avoid reading maps or using hand held devices like a GPS
• For the cool evenings, before lighting the fireplace, check the chimney to ensure it is free of any obstructions.
• Use power tools safely and always wear protective gear
• Be sure to have your pleasure craft operators card before you operate any boat
• Don’t forget your life jacket and where it while boating.

Have a great May long weekend. Please don’t drink and drive, boat or operate an ATV.
