Montreal Lake Woman helps save a life

May 17, 2011 | 6:41 AM

Delia Naytowhow was driving home early Sunday morning with her mom and daughter from a late night bingo game when she hit a deer.

She decided it was too late to call the police and continued to drive home along Highway 2 north of Prince Albert.

She taking the rest of the drive easy and as she came closer to Elk Ridge Road she looked out to a pond to see if any moose were crossing. There wasn’t a moose but there was definitely something.

“I seen something from the corner of my eye, something white,” she said. “I thought it was something else, but here it was a lady on her car.”

Not only was the woman on her car, but that car was almost completely submerged, almost 50 feet from the shore.

Naytowhow pulled over and ran to the shore and began yelling to women while calling 911.

“She was crying. I yelled and told her I was calling for help,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if I should jump in our not because I don’t even know how to swim.”

She waited until emergency crews arrived. Members of the Lakeland Fire Department donned their diving gear and helped the woman from on top of the car.

She was taken to hospital where she was treated for hypothermia.

For Naytownow, stopping and helping the woman was the only option.

“I was so worried, I couldn’t just leave her there,” she said. “It was instinct to help people. In was just seeing somebody out there and I have children myself and I kept thinking what it would be like to have my children out there.”

While Naytowhow was happy to help, she never learned the girl’s name or her condition. Police say she was taken to the hospital, but since there was nothing criminal about the event, it was up to the girl to fill in the details of the incident if she ever chooses to.
