Model train at-track-tion

The first annual Prince Albert Model Train and Hobby Show was conducted at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club over the weekend.

“We’re trying to promote our hobby to get new members, and then we’ve invited other hobby clubs in so that way they can promote their hobby and bring in new members at the same time,” said Brian Randall, the show’s co-ordinator

He said he hopes the event will get people on track to joining either his club or one of the others that were on display.

Some of the other clubs were promoting hobbies such as photography, fly fishing, and scale cars — there were about 19 exhibits in total.

Of course, the main attraction was the model train groups, who came to Prince Albert from various places, such as Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.

Randall, the president of the Prince Albert Model Railroaders, said he has grown up with trains.

“I was born in a family of railroaders. I worked on the railroad for several years myself. It’s in my blood,” Randall said.

Randall said he wanted to display his hobby so people can understand what he does.

“You tell people you’re into model railroading and they think you play with trains,” said Randall.

“But they come down and see what you actually do, they see all the commitment you put into it, all the details and everything like this, and they realize it’s not just trains you’re playing with, there’s a whole new world.”

Randall said he hopes the event can build up steam in the years to come and become an annual event.
