Dock limits coming for Emma and Christopher Lakes

A meeting today in Christopher Lake will help seal the fate of a new boat dock and lift policy in the Rural Municipality of Lakeland.

“It’s a policy designed to limit the number of structures on the lake, both from an environment side of things and to address some of the overcrowding that is going on,” said Dave Dmytruk, administrator of the RM of Lakeland.

Throughout the province recreational properties have increased in numbers and put more pressure on our lakes, he said.

“We felt that we needed to, kind of, put some controls and some rules in place to ensure that the general public has good access to the lakes.”

The municipality has worked with both the provincial and federal government on drafting the policy that went out to rate payers last month for feedback.

The reaction has been mixed so far, Dmytruk said.

“Some (are) in favour, some not in favour and certainly some (are) offering solution as to how we might improve on it, which is what we are looking for.”

One of the suggestions upsetting some cottage owners is the Rural Municipality’s proposal to restrict dock permits to lake front owners only.

The policy is a starting point, Dmytruk said. “We’re certainly not saying that we’ve kind of addressed all the situations that are present on Emma and Christopher Lakes. Some of the things that exist there are unique that our policy doesn’t address and we’re certainly looking to hear those concerns.”

The RM is looking at implementing some of the measures this year with rest coming into effect in 2012.

The meeting is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Christopher Lake Legion Hall.
