An 18-year-old Regina girl has died in a rollover west of Calgary, early Saturday morning.

The crash also involved Regina Pats defenseman Myles Bell.

In a news conference, president of the Pats, Brent Parker, said it is a very difficult time for the team and his family, “we are close with the young lady who died, as she was a close friend of our daughter. She was a beautiful young lady and she will be missed!”

Bell is currently in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In a release from Cochrane RCMP, they said a car was travelling east, toward Calgary, when the driver lost control and the vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest. They say the 18-year-old passenger died as a result of her injuries.

Bell is an up and coming defenseman in the WHL and was likely going to be drafted within the first three rounds of the upcoming NHL Draft in June. Bell was ranked 39th among North American skaters in the final Central Scouting rankings.

“The tragedy here is the loss of life and we will not lose sight of this, but we will support Myles as a member of our organization as he deals with this situation,” Parker concluded in his statement.

RCMP say alcohol and speed are factors in the crash and charges are pending against the driver.

The investigation is ongoing.
