Watching the royal wedding

Apr 29, 2011 | 7:53 AM

A couple of girls from Christopher Lake have had the morning of a lifetime.

Sisters, Lauren and Jodi Haubrich, were front and centre for the royal wedding in London.

“There’s so many people and we’ve been on our spots on the mall, right at the gate. We could see everybody go by really close and then when everyone went by it was like they were waving right at us. It was so cool,” Lauren said, by phone from in front of Buckingham Palace right after they pair saw the newlyweds kiss on the balcony.

“We’ve seen William and Harry go down first, then the guards went down, then Prince Philip and Prince Charles and Camilla and then the Queen went by and then Kate at the end with all of her bridesmaids and pageboys and stuff. It was crazy.”

The entire experience has been really positive for the Canadians, who travelled to the United Kingdom originally to visit some family.

“We’ve been seeing there’s so many people, everyone is smiling and having a really good time, everyone is really friendly with each other. We’ve seen lots of Canadians who have stopped to talk,” Lauren said.

“It’s been so much fun.”

It is easy to get caught up in celebrations, said Kate McKenzie, a woman who used to live in Prince Albert, but now lives about an hour outside of London.

“There are parties all over, I think they are expected hundreds. A street part out here is expecting 500 throughout the day, so people are really celebrating and I’m sure it will be going on till late,” she said from her home, early Friday morning.

Kate Middleton is well loved by the people around London, said McKenzie.

“She’s actually from a town about 20 minutes away from us and I think that’s what the English people love so much about her, she’s seems very down to earth and there is no kinds of airs and graces. Like today she wanted to do her own hair and makeup.”

McKenzie said her husband was outside Westminster Abbey this morning waving the Canadian flag.

Royal weddings seem to always create memories of a lifetime.

Mark Handley, who was born in Prince Albert, remembers being at the royal wedding 30 years ago as a young boy.

He says the Kate Middleton and Prince  William wedding reminds him of the one he attended in London because it is inclusive.

“The tube, the buses, the roads, the streets, the lanes the sidewalks were filled with happy content people,” he said.

“Everyone had a flag, so I fit right in.

“I felt like I was where I was supposed to be because there were so many other people in the same place and knowing that people back home were watching the same thing that i was witnessing.”

That is very similar to how Lauren feels. The event she has been part of, is something she will never forget.

“I was here for it and I will always remember that,” she said.
