PBCN members prepare for P.A. protest

Some members of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) are frustrated.

After last week’s chief and council vote, they have asked for a recount for the position of chief – there was only a difference of nine votes between incumbent Darryl McCallum, 1,237, and opposition Harold Linklater, 1,228.

They are entitled to a recount since there was only a difference of nine, said Myrtle Morin, PBCN band member and self-declared political activist. One of council position is getting a recount Wednesday – George Michel finished with one vote more than Kenny McCallum.

For PBCN members, it’s the final straw, she said.

“Part of the reason we are protesting is because we are alleging there is mass corruption,” she said.
Morin is one of the people on the rally’s organizing committee. A rally in Pelican Narrows went well, she said, and they plan to have one in Prince Albert on Wednesday.

She said there is no accountability within PBCN and has documents to prove it posted on www.vote4harold.com.

While Morin said she is in favour of Linklater, she is more in favour of responsibility and accountability.

“They (elected officials) hold a sacred trust of their people.”

What tipped the scales to get members to this point was the electoral officer told band members there would be a recount of the votes for chief, Morin said, but he later changed his mind and band members had to call his office to find out.

The rally in Prince Albert on Wednesday is set to start at 9 a.m. and run until noon all around the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Gymnasium, where they are doing the recount for the urban councillor position.

“We will be protesting in and around outside and around (Prince Albert Grand Council) as well,” she said.

She is hoping members of the PBCN come out to protest with them.

“It only takes a small handful of people to make change.”
