Golf season begins

Apr 25, 2011 | 6:30 AM

A little snow on the ground is not stopping people from getting out on the greens.

Over the weekend, Kachur’s Golf Course opened their back nine holes.

“It’s a little bit wet, but we are allowing walkers out there, just avid golfers who want to get out there and get going,” said Pat Kachur, owner of the course.

The fairways have some water on them, but the greens are ready.

She said they just wanted golfers to have the option to swing their clubs —they open early every year.
Claire Banting was one of the first out on the course on Friday.

It opened for the season at noon and she was waiting 15 minutes before.

“It is awesome – it is a beautiful awesome golf course. I have been waiting for this for a long time,” she said while at the 16th hole.

Banting has a membership to the golf course and said she plays it at least 100 times a year – almost every day.

“Being outside, I walk all the time. It’s good exercise,” she said, explaining that it is a challenging game and no round is ever the same.

Kachur hopes to open the front nine this week. It is currently closed because of flooding from the nearby river.

“As soon as the Shell River goes down and we pump the water out we will (open them),” she said.

With all the moisture they are not allowing any carts on the course at this time. She said it is limiting some of their regulars who are only willing to play if they don’t have to walk.

In the first hour of being open there were around 20 golfers who came out.

Banting said for the time of year, the greens were in great condition and she didn’t mind that there was still a little bit of snow.

Kachur laughed as she said that snow was likely the reason she was selling so many pink golf balls.

Kachur’s isn’t the only place open to swing at a ball, a handful of driving ranges opened over the weekend for those who want to work on their swing before playing a course.
