Watson declares state of emergency

Apr 24, 2011 | 2:12 PM

The town of Watson has become the latest community to declare a state of emergency.

Mayor Michael Saresky said Iron Spring Creek is level with Highway 5, causing a severe water main break in the town's well. The creek is also expected to crest Sunday.

Saresky said they are in the process of restoring the water supply.

“Due to the threat of the flood, Iron Spring Creek is rising rapidly, so we've been diking roads to protect our wells.”

The town has been aware of the potential of a water main break for months. Saresky says they have been preparing for this for months, following recommendation from the Watershed Authority.

“It's really making a difference. Right now we would be flooded had we not done those recommendations.”

Saresky is hoping the water supply will be back to normal by Monday. Watson has done a temporary fix in the meantime. A total of 15 communities in Saskatchewan have declared a state of emergency.

Watson is 181 kilometres southeast of Prince Albert.
