High water levels wreak havoc on Southern Saskatchewan

Apr 24, 2011 | 11:21 AM

The number of communities that have declared a state of emergency in Saskatchewan sits at 15.

Red Earth has been the only community to call off their emergency, but on Friday the town of Watson brought that number back up to 15.

Colin King, with the ministry of public safety, said they're getting the help they need.

“Co-ordination of provincial resources in support of all the communities is going very well,” he said.
King said priority communities include East End, the RM of Val Marie, and RM's east and southeast of Regina.

“We’re providing some advice, assistance and some resources in the form of sandbags and pumps, etc., to those communities.”

The Watershed Authority's John Fahlman said the Wascana Lake in Regina is 60 centimetres above supply, and is expecting a few more.

With other communities getting more water, there is some good news for Lumsden.

“It’s kind of levelling off again – it’s going to be a long recession. There is a lot of volume to move out,” Fahlman said.

Echo Lake is seeing more water than ever before.

“It’s exceeded, sort of, the flood record of 1974,” he said.

Echo Lake is anticipating another 12 centimetres.

On the bright side, Doug Wakabayashi, with the Ministry of Highways, said roads are getting better.

“We are down to about 27 segments of provincial highway that are being impacted by water to one degree or another,” he said.

About 14 highways have parts that are still closed.
