CANDAM presents new method in flood prevention

Apr 23, 2011 | 7:31 AM

It's known as the environmentally friendly alternative to traditional flood control and water diversion methods. It's called CANDAM.

It's a portable, A-frame style dam that assembles and dismantles very quickly. It's main purpose is for flood control and any water diversion projects. It's also to replace the sand bagging that has become common across Saskatchewan.

An unveiling of the project was held out front of the Legislature Thursday where a 50 foot dam was assembled.

President Lyle Rowland says there are so many benefits to what he's offering.

“This dam will be up in about an hour and half to two hours,” said Rowland. “You compare that to a sand bag structure and it would take about 30 to 50 times longer to put up. And unlike sand bags, this dam can be used over and over again with a life time usage.”

And the environmental component is also a big selling point.

“This is a very environmentally friendly product,” said Rowland. “There's really no footprint at all that it leaves in comparison to sand bags that can leave a residue of toxins.”

Rowland hopes his product catches on in Saskatchewan as it already has in areas like Fishing Lake and extensively in Alberta.
