High-speed chase makes a splash

A high-speed chase that started in Prince Albert came to an abrupt end 45 minutes later in Duck Lake — on a washed out road.

At 1:50 a.m., the Prince Albert Police Service received a call from a resident that someone in a half-ton truck had forcibly removed an ATM machine from The Cash Store on the 2700 block of Second Avenue West.

The police located the 2001 Red Dodge in the area of the South Hill mall. However, the driver didn’t stop for police, which lead to a high-speed chase, first south on Highway 2 then onto Highway 11.

Sgt. Kelly McLean with the Prince Albert Police Service said speeds were in excess of the posted highway speeds, but couldn’t say specifically how fast they were travelling.

“At Duck Lake, the accused attempted to elude police by traveling through a ditch, and an open field, merging onto a dirt road and through the Town of Duck Lake,” McLean said.

“He turned west onto another grid road, where he entered a large, washed out area, where the truck became immersed into three feet of water.”

The 21-year-old male from Saskatoon then gave himself up peacefully to the arresting officers without further incident. Rosthern and Wakaw RCMP assisted in the arrest.

“The stolen ATM was located in the back of the truck,” said McLean.

“The truck was determined to have been stolen earlier from a rural Prince Albert address.”

The man, whose name can’t be released at this time as a date for his first court appearance is being determined, is being held in custody, and is facing a variety of charges.
