Getting a look at flooding from above

Apr 19, 2011 | 12:31 PM

While 61 families been evacuated from the Red Earth First Nation because of severe flooding many others have stayed behind to help with the flood relief.

The local high school has become the headquarters for the reserve while the evacuation is underway.

People are gathering in the school gym for meals and meetings.

To get an idea of how bad the flooding is, Ian McKay, chief of the First Nation told reporters today to fill a glass full of water and then start adding ice cubes.

That’s what happened to the Carrot River, he said.

From the time the water levels started to rise until the first house was flooded took about 10 minutes, said McKay.

FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild joined McKay for a helicopter tour of the flood ravaged areas.

“It’s a lot of water,” McKay said.
