Under budget tender wins bid

Following the suggestion of architects AODBT, the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region Board has approved the tender by Graham Construction for the Shellbrook Integrated Health Complex.

“Graham Construction Ltd. has a good track record in the province, and AOBDT also has a tremendous track record so their recommendation is one that we followed,” said Gord Dobrowolsky, the board chairman.

Graham Construction was the lowest bidder, which is why the architects recommended the bid because it represented the best value for the work. The tender amount was $20.84 million.

Three other companies bid on the facility including Quorex, Kor Alta and Wright construction contractors, there was a variance of about 10 per cent between the highest and lowest bids.

Approval to the award construction contract is also being requested from the Ministry of Health as part of the capital planning process.

The next step is issuing a letter of intent to the contractor, which has to be done within 30 days of the tender close, to ensure the contractor’s price is valid.

Then it’s time for a sod turning.

“Time is of the essence, we’ve seen the road construction going on Highway 11, they are moving dirt, so dirt can be moved at any time,” Dobrowolsky said.

The facility, which will be located in the west of the town, just south of Highway 3, is important to the community.

Community members have worked hard to fundraise for the facility that is in desperate need of replacement, Dobrowolsky said.

“This is now coming to fruition, they have worked very, very hard to make this a reality and it now a reality we are, I would say, days or weeks away from earth being moved and that is exciting,” he said.

The end product will be a combination long-term care and acute care centre.
