Parking fees and fines go up

Apr 13, 2011 | 6:14 AM

The city has approved a new parking bylaw that would increase fees and fines for parking in the downtown core.

The most notable increase in fines was for parking in a handicap stall without a valid permit – under the new bylaw, the fine will be $300 up from $100.

Coun. Ted Zurakowski had been advocating for increased fines and enforcement for handicap parking violations.

He said he was happy to see it finally go into action.

“I’m pleased with the support of council to move the recommendations, which include the increase for violators of disabled parking to a fine of $300,” he said.

Fines across the board will also go up. A standard parking violation will now cost motorists $25 with an early payment option of $10.

While the increase is now part of the city’s parking bylaw, it should be a few weeks before the city has all the necessary tools in place to administer the higher fees.

In addition to the handicap parking fines, the city also plans on increasing parking rates in the downtown core.

The standard per hour rate will double to $1 per hour up from 50 cents.

The increases are expected to help the city generate approximately $40,000 per month in revenue up from $20,000 per month.

The money from meters is set to fund the replacement the existing meters, some of which are more than 50 years old, with new digital meters that accept multiple forms of payment.

While increases in fines will come in a few weeks, meter charges will not go up until they are changed to the new ones.
