Crowned for Prince Albert

Prince Albert is home to one of Saskatchewan’s newest beauty queens.

Melissa Menzies, 14, was one of nine winners at the Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World pageant.

She was crowned Miss. Teen Central Saskatchewan.

Menzies said the win took her by surprise.

“I was surprised because I was going against people that are 19 years old,” she said.

Menzies was nervous about the pageant, but mostly about her speech.

“I did it on what I stand for… donating money to charities that take in children.”

She said her favourite part of the pageant was the evening gown portion because she got to see the different styles of dresses and what kinds of things the other girls liked.

Menzies’ mother, Nicole Rancourt, went with Menzies to the pageant but wasn’t allowed backstage or to have anything to do with the production.

Rancourt said it was nerve-wracking not knowing how everything was going, but Menzies seemed like she was having a lot of fun with it.

“Saturday evening she was talking about how much fun she was having and how everybody was so nice and she was meeting new friends,” said Rancourt.

Menzies said the best thing is that she’s been able to meet new people and make new friends.

She will be heading to Toronto in July to compete in the Miss. Teen Canada-World pageant, representing Prince Albert and Saskatchewan.

Menzies said she is excited for “everything” about going to the national pageant but she is a bit nervous as well.

“I have to get on the plane by myself and everything and we’re not allowed really to have contact with our parents or anything,” she said.
