Garden River residents dealing with flooded roads

“Water, lots of water, creeks are running, roads are starting to get washing out, culverts can’t handle the flow.”

Bernard Zurakowski, reeve of the RM of Garden River, explained what his RM, northeast of Prince Albert, looks like right now. He is getting worried about the flooding issues they are dealing with, he said during a meeting about the issue.

“We have got quite a few roads that are washed out.

“You go down the road and it’s good, you go down half an hour later and it’s washed out,”

The RM is asking people to be careful. They have had flooding issues in the past, but nothing like this.

“The flow seems to be coming hard and fast all of a sudden. It doesn’t seem like as much water, but what is coming is pretty forceful, there is a lot of it.”

At this point there is nothing they can do. They have the roads blocked and flagged, but until the water is gone, they can’t start rebuilding.

Zurakowski said the price is adding up by the day.

“It’s going to be tens-of-thousands of dollars right now is what we are looking at and it’s just starting,” he said, explaining he thinks the price tag for repairs will keep climbing in the coming days.

So far there has only been one home threatened, but it has since cleared up.

He said he just wants people to stay safe.

“If you see red flags, be careful, because there are problems up ahead.”
