Melfort residents face tax increase

Apr 8, 2011 | 6:33 AM

Melfort residents are facing higher costs this year.

Mayor Kevin Phillips said a tax increase is likely as City Council completes their budget discussions, expected to be wrapped up on Monday.

“You know I'm thinking probably three to four per cent, somewhere in there. We want to keep it as low as we can but the growth and the projects we have on the go do tend to mount up,” Phillips said.

Some of those projects include some news streets being opened and the installation of a new water and sewer line in the area south of Highways 3 and 6.

“There are things that we have to start planning for. The main arena within the next couple of years is going to need some repairs in order to make it last,” Phillips said.

Phillips said the arena costs could run between $200,000 and $500,000 during the next three years.

The city will also be doing some landscaping work this year near the new mall development to prepare for residential developments.

City Council will vote on the budget later on in the week.
