Bail denied for accused in Pelican Lake assault

Apr 8, 2011 | 2:22 PM

A man accused in a case of vigilante justice will remain behind bars until his trial.

Larry Thomas, 27, is one of two people charged with assaulting three victims on two separate occasions at a mall on the Pelican Lake First Nation back in February and March.

His request for bail was denied today which came as no surprise to his lawyer Brian Pfefferle, who said the chips were stacked against this client.

“He had some narcotic trafficking charges as well as charges related to this incident surrounding youth being detained in a Pelican Lake car wash, Pfefferle said.

“We knew going in today that it was going to be a very difficult bail hearing for us. We had to prove why Mr. Thomas should be released and we obviously did not meet that onus.”

In one incident it's alleged that two teens were tied up, had water poured on them and had booster cables attached to their genitals, said crown lawyer Mitch Peche in an interview with the CBC.

The charges against Thomas include sexual assault with a weapon, assault, unlawful confinement, exposing obscene matter and uttering threats.

Thomas will appear by video link on Apr. 25.

We'll likely set a date for a preliminary hearing, said Pfefferle.

Francis Hernandez, 47, returns to court on Apr. 20 to face similar charges.

A third person has also been charged. Manon Boisvert, 39, has a court date on Apr. 26 in Spiritwood for a charge of unlawful confinement.
