The RID program leads to charging impaired driver

Apr 6, 2011 | 12:02 PM

A call into the Prince Albert Police Service resulted in an intoxicated driver being taken off the streets and charged.

On Apr. 4, at 11:32 p.m., officers received a call that a 23-year-old female driver was under the influence, and hit a light standard at the 3600 block of 5th Ave. E.

Upon arrival, police located the female driver from Debden with her two-year-old child. The woman was arrested for impaired driving, and her child was taken into the care of Mobile Crisis because she was unable to offer any alternative care options.

The child was medically examined after it was discovered the child was not properly restrained at the time of the collision.

The female driver was charged with driving without a license, impaired driving, and allowing a passenger under the age of 16 to not wear a seatbelt.

Sgt. Kelly McLean said this was roughly the twelfth time a citizen has called in to police regarding drunk driving since the province launched the Report Impaired Driving (RID) campaign in Prince Albert.

“We’ve had excellent response from the public and we encourage people to continue to utilize the RID program if they suspect a drunk driver on the road,” McLean said.

“It’s extra sets of eyes out there on the road looking for impairment… we’re all working together, the police and the public, working together to get impaired drivers off the road.”
