P.A. represented in Literacy Award nominations

Two Prince Albertans are up for Literacy Awards of Merit.

Margaret McLeod and Allan Pasloski are both up for the award from the Saskatchewan Literacy Network.

McLeod was nominated for the Literacy Professional award from director at the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan (LDAS), where she works in downtown Prince Albert.

The award is for those who have spent many years working in the field of literacy. McLeod said she has been in the field for about 10 years in both a professional and volunteer.

“I’ve worked with family literacy. I’ve worked with children in prepping for school readiness. I also work one-on-one, and I think probably the most rewarding work I do right now is work with both adults and children,” she said.

McLeod said many of the children she works with do not have all of their needs met in school. She said she believes the schools just don’t have the funding to keep up with all the students.

“I really enjoy the variety, the people that we meet and the successes,” McLeod said.

“At this point I can’t think of anything I can be doing that would be more beneficial to society than helping people to learn to read. What can you do in this world if you can’t read, how can you succeed?”

McLeod said she did not expect the nomination and is very honoured by it.

She said her biggest reward is working with her students and watching them succeed.

She is currently the ABC program co-ordinator with LDAS and works with children who need help with math and reading.

Pasloski was nominated for his award by Westview Community School.

He is the general manager of the Prince Albert Ice Hawks hockey team. Last year when the elementary school got a grant from Indigo Books to stock-up their library, Pasloski said the team would lend them the bus and cover the cost of a driver and fuel to go back and forth to Saskatoon with the students.

He said at the time it would have cost the school about $12,000 – a big chunk of their budget.

“It was just exactly what we wanted to do. We were looking for somebody in the community to work with and in the community to be a part of, kids in particular that we wanted to be a part of,” Pasloski told paNOW in December.

The awards will be held in Saskatoon on May 5.
