Dancing to the Top

Apr 3, 2011 | 8:16 AM

The 15-year-old Performing Arts Warehouse in Prince Albert is dancing to the top.

The dance studio won the top prize at the Pulse dance competition on the Mar. 25 weekend for having the most overall points.

Donna Malach, co-owner and manager of the studio, said the win is great for the students.

“(I’m) pretty excited for the kids. They looked very polished, their numbers were very together.”

One hundred and three students took part in the studio’s 80 entries, and 65 of those entries placed first, second or third.

Rachel Brennan is one of the dancers at the studio who cleaned up at the competition.

Brennan competed in the lyrical, tap, jazz and ballet categories with both solo and group numbers.

She placed in every one, with three out of five solos garnering a first place medal.

“I had pretty high marks so I was really excited about that,” said Brennan.

She has been dancing since she was a toddler, but Brennan said she still gets nervous before competitions.

“Every time I do a solo I always get nervous… you always get those butterflies when you go on by yourself, so it’s still nerve racking,” she said.

Brenner said she loves dancing and can’t see herself doing anything else.

“It’s fun… dancing is my life, I’m at the Performing Arts Warehouse everyday, either working or dancing or assisting and it’s just awesome, I love it.”

Malach said the studio hasn’t had this level of success before at a competition, but they did do something different with the competition groups this year.

“We had a select group (for competitions), they practice every other weekend, and we’re thinking that might’ve helped, just working on competition stuff and not combining it with class work,” said Malach.

This was the first year they went to the Pulse competition, Malach said it let them see some studios they wouldn’t normally compete against and it helped them get ready for the Prince Albert Festival of

Dance which tends to have a high calibre of competition.

The Prince Albert Festival of Dance takes place Apr. 13 to 17.
