Youths arrested in break and enter

Mar 31, 2011 | 4:58 PM

RCMP arrested two youths after a break and enter that occurred early yesterday morning.

According to the RCMP, two suspects approached a trailer home in the Eastview Trailer Park at around 6 a.m. Wednesday and began to kick on the door.

The lone occupant, a 92-year-old man, was awakened and made his way to the door, when the two suspects smashed in the door and began demanding money.

The man gave up what money he had and the suspects left. He began to call the police and while on the phone, the culprits returned and began to demand more money.

They began to rifle through the kitchen and finally left after finding a few more dollars.

Prince Albert RCMP Cpl. Mike Poirier said police attended the scene quickly after the phone call was made.

“The elderly man was uninjured. For him it was quite obviously a traumatic experience but otherwise he was unharmed,” he said.

Poirier said officers began to search for suspects in the vicinity because it was apparent the suspects had targeted the home specifically for its lone, elderly occupant.

“Our approach was to systematically patrol and do a neighbourhood investigation with all the other occupants of the trailer park until we obtained information about possible suspects,” he said.

Within a few hours, police say they located two suspects who lived in same trailer park and arrested them.

Police say the two had known associations with a local street gang.

Poirier said the man was unharmed but the tense nature of the situation could have ended much worse.

“In this case, we have a man who is 92 years of age residing alone. Obviously this is last thing this person needs,” he said.

“The problem with that kind of situation, often with all the emotions involved, both culprits and victims, even though the culprits don’t necessary mean to hurt anyone, things can happen quickly and its fairly easy to cause a situation where someone can die.”

Thankfully that wasn’t the case, Poirier said.

The two 16-year-old males, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, remain in custody and will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Apr. 4. They face a total of 19 charges including home invasion.
