Missing dog found dead

Mar 30, 2011 | 10:50 AM

A sad update to a story that paNOW was first to tell you about.

Back in November Barb Wicks, who lives on a farm near Birch Hills, returned home to find her two golden retrievers missing. The incident has been one of many reports in the area of dogs disappearing without a trace.

The male, called Bear, returned home on his own two weeks later, starved and nearly frozen.

Last week, Barb Wicks said she was called by a man who lives in the area, who said he found a dead dog near the Muskoday Bridge, about 1.5 miles from the farm. Barb's husband then went to investigate

“And he wasn't sure if it was her, because there was quite a bit of ice over her. So we went back out with an axe and a hammer and we chiseled away and it was Lacy,” said Wicks.

She said she still has no doubt that her dogs were stolen.

“We've been told that thieves have talked about it. Our dogs did not wander. They did not leave our yard. We kept getting phone calls and tips but we were always two steps behind.”

As for her other dog Bear has not been the same, Wicks said.

“He is very nervous. He doesn't trust strangers. He has a tremendous eating disorder. He does not want to get into a vehicle. No one would ever trick him again,” Wicks said.

“We highly suspect he stayed with her until she died, then he headed back which is very fortunate.”

Wicks said she can't understand why someone would take her dogs. She said she was told that someone may have wanted to use the female for breeding.

“In the end either they got tired of having our dogs or they were afraid of getting caught.”
