Concussion Information from Parkland Ambulance

A concussion is a brain injury that affect how you think and remember things. It is important to know
that you do not have to knocked out (lose consciousness) to never had a concussion. This is a
serious injury that requires medical attention.

Any blow to the head, face or neck or a blow to the body causing jarring of the head can cause a concussion.
What do you do?
• STOP PLAYING THE SPORT RIGHT AWAY!
• If the person is unconscious call 9-1-1, do not move them and wait for paramedics. Administer
first aid if trained.
• If the person is conscious, with no other injuries, see your doctor as soon as possible the same day!
• 7-10 days is the normal rest period however in some cases it can be much longer.
• Ensure plenty of rest!

When can I return to sport?
• When you doctor says that you can and you have no signs or symptoms of injury.
• Start with light activity for 10-15 minutes. No symptoms then advance.
• Sport specific activity such as skating or running for 20-30 minutes. No symptoms then advance.
• On field practice but NO CONTACT. No symptoms then advance.
• “On field” practice with contact, if cleared by doctor, no symptoms then full game play.
Each step should take a minimum of one day.
If you have any symptoms i.e. headache, sick to stomach or dizzy, STOP and rest 24 hours before resuming the suggested step process.

• Person unaware date, time place, acts confused
