Community Services – So Many Activities for Muskoday

Mar 29, 2011 | 2:09 PM

New Horizon (Federal Program) funded over $23,000.00 for the Building Bridges program to unite our youth with our Elders through workshops that happen every Wednesday after school. The youth learn traditional crafts like Dream Catchers, Beading, Sewing etc. In the spring they will conquer wood working as they will build home signs for all of the elders and picnic tables along with assisting with the Elder’s garden this summer.

Evergreen Grant donated $10,000.00 towards our Veteran’s Memorial Park. Due to the wet weather last summer we were able to carry over the project. To date we have planted 24 established poplar trees in a large circle and put in four flag poles by our Memorial Plaque. This spring we will finish the park by placing a perennial garden in the center with the outer rim prepared for annuals for families of Veteran’s families to plant each spring to honor our Veteran’s. This project is co-funded by the Dakota Dunes CDC.

True Sport donated $25,000.00 through a grant for an afterschool program that develops youth in the area of sport. Through the grant we are able to provide shoes and gym wear for each youth, storage lockers, sporting equipment and bring in technicians to help our youth development. This program happens all year from Tuesday to Thursday after school.

Community Initiatives Funds just approved a $78,500 grant to help build capacity in the Province for other communities like ours to develop an outdoor education program for themselves.

The Great Outdoors project will utilize our successful outdoor ed program in which we take aboriginal youth up North each summer to experience camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, fishing and exploring the great Churchill River System.

The fund is to assist Muskoday in promoting throughout the province to FSIN’s Sport, Culture, Recreation, Youth Board, Tribal Councils, First Nations and Youth at Risk programs that happen in five of our cities. During the Fall of 2011 till spring of 2012 we will assist and subsidize communities to come to workshops and take training in grant writing, outdoor ed skills etc.

They will than bring youth from their community to our Northern Camps throughout the summer to experience what we call the Great Outdoors. It is our hope that we can help establish the outdoor ed program in their community be it small or large.

After the summer camps another two day workshop will be hosted in which we provide communities with a blue print on how to establish their program and how to look for funding etc.

2013 Summer Games Bid is a partnership established between Muskoday, Birch Hills and Prince Albert. We have submitted our bid package to FSIN in the hopes to host our First ever First Nation Games on our Reserve and surrounding area. The partnership involves Birch Hills as we will utilize their Golf Course for the Junior Competition and their softball diamonds for one of the divisions. Prince Albert will play host to the Opening Ceremonies, Senior Golf Competitions, several Softball & Soccer divisions and Track & Field. Muskoday will host competitions in Softball (One Division), Soccer (One Division), Canoeing (all), Archery (All) and Cross Country Running (all). The athletes village will be at our Pow Wow Grounds and Veteran’s Memorial Park will be the location for our Ceremonial purposes. Proposed dates are July 17-23, 2013 where over 3,000 athletes will compete in our area. We are bidding to host against four other communities ( LaRonge, Gordon’s, Waterhen & Little Pine). Tentative dates for site evaluations will happen in the spring and winner of the 2013 Summer Games Bid should be completed by FSIN’s Spring/Summer assembly.
