Teen who damaged care home sentenced to probation

A local, 15-year-old boy has been given one-year probation for driving a truck into a Prince Albert care home.

The incident occurred on Oct. 30, 2010 at 4:40 a.m. The teenager illegally volunteered to be the designated driver for some people at a party and borrowed his father’s truck without permission.

The boy first hit a car, then smashed through the corner of North View home on Southwood Drive, demolished a fence, and came to a stop by hitting a person’s garage.

Crown prosecutor John Morrall said in court that the woman who owned the garage confronted the teenager and asked if he had been drinking. The boy said he hadn’t and then ran off. The judge said in court that there was no evidence to suggest that alcohol was involved in the incident.

At the time of the accident, Sgt. Kelly McLean with the Prince Albert Police Service said the factors of speeding, slippery roads, and driver inexperience most likely resulted in the crash.

During the boy’s probation, he is ordered to keep the peace, report to a youth worker, reside in the residence approved by the youth worker, follow a curfew of 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., pay $500 restitution for the damage to the garage and is prohibited from driving for one year.

Morrall said he had been unable to get a hold of the owner of the car that was damaged in the accident, but Legal Aid lawyer Estes Fonkalsrud said SGI will most likely deal with it.

Morrall also said he wasn’t able to contact anyone with the care home regarding restitution for the damage done there.

The teenager has nine previous offences, and the judge told the teenager in court that he was very close to a custodial order.
