Fire evacuates mental health villa

Mar 22, 2011 | 10:17 PM

A mattress fire caused an evacuation of the Crean Villa at Victoria Hospital, this evening.

“It was in an observation room,” said Doug Dahl, communication officer for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.

“The staff including the commissioners and security responded and the fire department was called.”

It wasn’t a big fire and there was only a minimal amount of smoke, Dahl said.

But, patients were taken out of the unit while the alarms were going off and relocated to other areas of the hospital.

The fire department used fans to clear the air of smoke and once it was safe patients returned, he said.

There was a patient in the observation room at the time of the fire, but Dahl said as far as he understands no one was hurt.

“The police have also been contacted to help investigate the cause of the fire,” he said.

“The staff responded very quickly and appropriately made sure no one got hurt, which is the important thing,”

Crean Villa, one of the mental health pavilions, is located at the back of the Victoria Hospital property and will be the site of the new Family Treatment Centre.
