Prince Albert parkway funding renewed

The city’s riverside parks will get another injection of money over the next five years with the renewal of a provincial funding agreement.

On Monday, the city held a special council meeting to approve the renewal of the $162,000 per year in annual funding for the city’s riverside parks known collectively as the Pehonan Parkway.

According to city open spaces manager Bob Gill, the Pehonan Parkway includes the parklands along the North Saskatchewan River, the Little Red River Park, the Downtown Lions’ Park and more.

He said the money is split each year between operating and capital costs and is a boon for the park spaces.

“It’s for different items that come up within the park that we get the funding to help and assist with that,” said Gill.

“It’s a substantial amount to work with on a yearly basis.”

Gill said several projects have been approved by the Pehonan board including stabilizing the riverbank, recapping walkway paths near the Elk’s Cosmo Lodge, construction of more picnic sites at the Little Red River Park and others.

The upgrades to the parks follow the city’s 20-year Master Plan of the River Valley, which the city has been following for about three years.

The plan calls for the development of recreation along the riverfront and to keep the river as the focus for the city as it expands.
