A plea for young country music talent

Some new and familiar faces are taking the reins for the Prince Albert Country Music Association (PACMA).

Among the newly appointed positions, David Sinclair has been elected president. Sinclair has had the position in the past. He said he decided to put his hat back in the ring after seeing a fading interest in participation by the PACMA members.

“I would like to try to revitalize the organization – our numbers have been down over the past couple of years.”

Sinclair said a change is needed, especially if Prince Albert wants to host the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards.

“We need some new blood and some young blood and hopefully that will be my mission in the next couple of years.”

To do that, Sinclair said he wants to recruit some young singers and musicians to join the Country Music Association and perform in some of their showcases.

“We have a couple or three shows every year … hopefully young people will gravitate to those shows and make themselves known.”

The provincial body, the Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA), is mirroring the effort to involve more young people by giving performers, younger than 18 years old, a reduced membership price.

Sinclair said a membership entitles the person to perform at any of their shows and attend the awards weekend.

“Prince Albert’s going to be bidding on the SCMA Awards to have it come to Prince Albert once again and I would like to have a showcase of young people lined up to fill our talent portion of the program.”

To get that bid, Sinclair said they are going to have to make sure they have enough people to step up and take on key roles

The 2011 awards weekend takes place April 1-3 in Swift Current, Sinclair hopes they can get the awards weekend to come back to Prince Albert for 2012 or 2013.
