New Canola trials taking root this spring

Farmers deciding which canola varieties to seed will soon have better information at their finger tips.

A new program that evaluates the performance of commercial varieties launches this spring.

Brett Halstead,  chair of the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission said the program gives growers un biased information about the different varieties on the market.

“The big one they are going to want is yields. They're also going to be able to the net benefit of one system versus another,” he said.

The previous trials were suspended last year after seed companies objected to how they were conducted.

Halstead said most have signed up under the new system which will use variety specific weed control and regionally specific growing practices.

Saskatchewan is one of three test sites for the $1 million dollar trial program.

A recent survey found, unbiased variety data is the most important information to farmers, next to weather and commodity prices.
