Honour given to Malcolm Jenkins

Mar 16, 2011 | 4:47 PM

Malcolm Jenkins received a standing ovation as he walked up to the podium during a reception for the Prince Albert Business Award Finalists, Wednesday morning.

He had just been named the recipient of the Samuel McLeod Legacy Award.

Jenkins, owner of Canadian Tire in Prince Albert, said when he was told he would be receiving the award he was quite surprised and flattered.

At 68 Jenkins said he feels he’s too young to be getting a long service award, adding he’s still got a long way to go.

“It’s gone by in such a flash. That’s why I kind of joke about a long service award. I just don’t think in those terms,” he said.

Jenkins moved with his wife Melba to the Prince Albert area 21 years ago. The Legacy Award comes almost exactly a year after Melba passed away.

With many philanthropic gestures and optimism Jenkins and his wife have had a big impact on the community over the years.

Jenkins isn’t someone to lean on his past recognition. He was introduced at the reception as a forward thinker and after the announcement he talked about some of his thoughts for the future of Prince Albert.

“I look forward to the next adventure. In my head I can see a beautiful swimming pool between the hospital and the soccer center. Maybe it’s a little early, maybe it’s down the road a ways but I still think it’s a dream worth having so that’s where I’m at.”

Jenkins will be honoured with other Business Award winners next month the Samuel McLeod Prince Albert Business Awards.

Finalists are recognized in several categories including AODBT Architecture Interior Design for Business of the Year, Environment, and Job Creation

The Gala evening will take place Apr. 5. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Chamber of Commerce office at 764-6222.
