FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild’s honesty about drunk driving case debated

Mar 16, 2011 | 6:40 AM

The sentencing for FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild may be done, but the aftermath of his impaired driving case is far from over.

Lonechild insists he was completely honest with the FSIN's Credentials Review Committee about his charge stemming from an incident in 2009. It was that very committee who ultimately decided he could run in the election that followed.

Aubrey Goforth is one of three people who sits on the committee and claims he was never informed about the drunk driving charge until he heard it in the news.
“I knew nothing about it. I didn't see him, all I understood is that there was a small charge, and it wasn't, you know, serious,” said Goforth.

However, in an earlier interview with News Talk Radio, Lonechild said something quite different. “I've been honest throughout. I did disclose to the full credentials committee of the pending charge,” Lonechild had said.

Dennis Crane and Albert Angus are the other two committee members. Both declined to comment when contacted by News Talk Radio.

Senators within the FSIN, including hockey great Fred Sasakamoose are still calling for Lonechild's resignation. In court Tuesday, Lonechild was fined $1150, and his license was suspended for a year. It was also revealed in court that at the time he was pulled over, Lonechild was driving with a suspended licence.

Lonechild maintains it was for unpaid traffic tickets.
