Elections in full swing for Lac La Ronge Indian Band

Mar 16, 2011 | 6:48 AM

Members of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band head to the polls at the end of the month.

There are eight people in the leadership race for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

The incumbent chief, Tammy Cook-Serason, is being challenged by Robert Ballentyne, Gerald Cook,

Henry McKenzie, Barb McLeod, Percy Mirasty, Stewart Mirasty and Roger Ratt.

“This is the most (candidates) that I’ve had since I’ve been there (and) this is my third time running the elections here,” said Charles Whitecap, electoral officer.

Cook-Searson has been chief of the band since 2005.

There are six electoral sections and a good turnout, said Whitecap. For the last election, three years ago, about 3,000 people voted, out of 5,500 eligible voters.

Whitecap said he hopes to see more people come out this year.

“I ask the electorate to come out and vote,” he said.

Advanced polling is Mar. 24, with regular ballots being cast Mar. 31.

Results are expected by 9 p.m. on the 31st.
