The North braces for a blast of winter

Mar 10, 2011 | 1:15 PM

The snow is coming, and lots of it according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency said Prince Albert is on the southern tip of a storm system that is tracking through the northern grain belt today.

A heavy snowfall warning is covering Spiritwood, east to Hudson Bay and north to Pelican Narrows and La Ronge.

Between 10 and 20 centimeters are expected starting tonight and tomorrow, but snow amounts will vary from area to area, said John-Paul Gragg, Environment Canada meteorologist.

“It’s the northern edge of the system that is going to be getting most of the snow. We’re looking at snow beginning after dinner time, heavier precipitation late in the evening and continuing all night long,” he said

The City of Prince Albert is prepared for the worst that Mother Nature can produce.

City of Prince Albert equipment was being mobilized this afternoon, said roadways manager, Brent Kennedy.

“We’ll have all of our plows and graders plus two on standby,” Kennedy said.

Gragg said highway travel could become dicey once the storm reaches us.

Wind speeds of 30 to 50 kilometres per hour will create blowing snow and reduce visibility he said.

Kennedy is asking residents not to park on the streets overnight so they can keep up with the snow. He said if the city gets as much snow as forecasted, there will be a parking ban in place on snow routes.
