Man avoids prison sentence for assaulting off duty cop

Tyler Hansen will be spending the next two years in a provincial jail.

The 28-year-old man from Buffalo Narrows was sentenced Wednesday in Prince Albert Provincial Court to two years less a day after credit was given for six months spent in remand.

In June of 2010, Hansen attacked off-duty RCMP officer Chris Hujber, breaking his ankle and nose.

The incident occurred when Hansen was in his vehicle doing what was described as “stunting”, which is when the vehicle is revved with the brakes on so it stays in one place yet allows the wheels to turn.  It creates a loud squealing noise and smoke from the tires.

Hujber knocked on the passenger door and told Hansen to stop.  Hansen then got out of the vehicle and attacked Hujber.

Judge S.D. Loewen found Hansen guilty of aggravated assault, but not guilty of attacking a police officer because he felt there was reasonable doubt that Hansen didn’t know Hujber was with the RCMP.

Even though Crown prosecutor Cameron Scott was asking for a lengthier sentence, he said he is still satisfied with the judge’s decision.

“I’m not disappointed, that’s for sure.  I think it’s appropriate,” said Scott.  “He’s given the accused a chance, and hopefully the accused can take that opportunity and we don’t have further problems of this particular nature.”

Along with the jail sentence, Hansen will have to provide a DNA sample, and is prohibited from firearms and other weapons for 10 years.
