Looking for the best in show

Mar 7, 2011 | 5:21 AM

It was barking dogs and wagging tails at the exhibition centre over the weekend.

The Prince Albert Kennel Club had their annual dog show.

Kathy Horne, show superintendent for the Prince Albert Kennel Club, said the three-day event had two shows a day and 175 dogs per show. All the shows were full.

“This club has been going since the 1920’s, and we’ve been running dog shows pretty much since then,” she said adding it’s very prestigious to win the best-in-show.

“These dogs, that are in this show, are working towards their Canadian Championship and if they have their Canadian Championships, they are being campaigned to get the most points in their breed for across Canada.”

She said throughout the year dogs and their owners try to earn as many points as possible through the various dog shows.

Shirley Sarves goes to a show a month during the spring and fall.

She called it a hobby, but it takes work.

“With the schnauzers, they need about an hour prep before they go into the ring,” Sarves said explaining she needs to wash, blow-dry and generally get her dogs looking their finest.

She said the competition over the weekend was good, with six schnauzers in the category.

Horne agrees that the competition was strong.

“We’ve seen some lovely dogs in a great variety of breeds,” she said.
