Hooping for fitness

Mar 6, 2011 | 7:25 AM

It was a morning to get your heart rate up.

Saturday, the Culenaere Library hosted some fun fitness for kids.

Kelleen Wolf, a local fitness instructor, led them in skipping and hula hooping.

“It’s important to be healthy, and for kids to be active out there running… and getting their heart rates up a bit. The most important thing is to have fun doing it so they continue to be active (as they get older,” she said.

She said the goal is to make exercising fun. As she taught them tricks and techniques, she urged them to show and teach their friends.

“(The goal is to) encourage kids to be active and to be outside more instead of sitting in front of their TV, and playing games and being outside with other kids and being more social and actively social.”

Wolf did similar classes about a year ago at the library, but the youth caught on so quickly, after a couple of lessons she had nothing left to teach.

She said she has also started the “skip chicks,” where she goes into schools and teaches skipping.

Wolf said she wanted them to learn the skills the same way she learnt as a child with everything from “double dutch” to long-rope skipping.

“I wanted to bring that back,” she said.
