P.A. rakes in SCMA nominations

Prince Albert is lined-up for some big recognition at the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards.

The nominations were announced last week, and Larry Krause, president of the Prince Albert Country Music Association, said there are a lot of Prince Albert names on the nomination list.

“It might be a different representation of individuals, but Prince Albert itself has a strong representation when comes time for nominations for the SCMA awards and also for winning awards as well,” he said.

“On the one hand it’s always nice to see that type of thing, but on the other hand I wouldn’t go so far as to say not so much of a surprise, but it’s something that’s certainly not been out of the ordinary because Prince Albert’s been is such a hot bed of country music in the province and actually country wide,” he said.

Krause has been performing for about nine years. He has his name on five nominations this year –album of the year, male vocalist of the year, country music person of the year, composer of the year and a joint nomination with Dave Sinclair for record producer of the year.

“It’s really, I guess, it gives sort of a validation of what a person’s been doing in the music industry and the fact that you’re getting a level of recognition from your peers as to the activity and the calibre of your work,” he said.

Glenna Switzer, chairwoman of the host committee of the SCMA awards, agrees with Krause when it comes to what these awards mean for artists.

“It’s more exposure for them as they are progressing in their career,” she said about the awards.

She explained artists get nominated by their peers. Everyone who is a member of the SCMA sends in what is call a “first ballot.” It is a list of who they think deserve the awards.

The people who receive the most votes get the nomination.

Now that the nominations are out, Switzer’s next step is the awards weekend, April 2 and 3 in Swift Current, and she is already swamped with work.

She called the three-day event a “huge undertaking.”

The nominations include many other Prince Albertans including Donny Parenteau, Mosaic Music, CKBI’s Ken Landers and CKBI’s Don Mitchell.
