Trappers caught in tight spot

Mar 2, 2011 | 11:38 AM

A group representing trappers in Northern Saskatchewan is hunting for more cash.

The provincial government cut funding in half for the Northern Saskatchewan Trappers Association. They used to get $50,000 a year.

“Normally we bring trappers from all over Northern Saskatchewan to Prince Albert once a year for a trapper’s convention. Now we couldn't do that. We had to cancel this one in the middle of March,” said Clifford Ray, association president.

The convention is very beneficial because it is the one time a year trappers from across Saskatchewan can get together to discuss their issues, but the money they do get barely covers the expenses of the executive who come in from all corners of the province, he said.

“We hope to make a trip to Regina and talk to the government about re-instatement.”

In the meantime the association has looked at creative new ways to raise money.

“We set up a cooperative structure. And I believe this will help deal with the wishes of our grandfathers, by having a membership fee of $5 dollars per person. And when you have a population of 50 to 60 thousand, I believe this will help our cause,” Ray said.

Ray said they still hope to have a convention in either May or early August.
